What's the difference between a WDT tool and a distribution tool?

A WDT tool uses needles to stir and break up clumps in your coffee grounds, whereas a distribution tool (coffee leveler) evenly spreads and tamps the grounds flat before you apply the final tamp with a tamper. The WDT tool focuses on declumping for even density, and the distribution tool ensures the puck surface is level. Together, they prepare an ideal coffee bed for extraction.

Do I need both a WDT tool and a distribution leveler?

Using both will give you the most consistent results, but it's not absolutely required. Many people use just a WDT tool and then tamp, which already significantly improves shot consistency. Adding a distribution tool after WDT (and before tamping) can further optimize the evenness of the puck. If you're very particular about your espresso, using both tools can help maximize extraction quality.
